Free Water for Obalende Residents

The Environment group constructed 2 water facilities in Obalende which were commissioned on September 21st 2006 by Dr.Folarin Gbadebo-Smith, Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende Local Government Development Centre.

The water facilities were installed on Ajeniya/Ojo Street and Nojeem Maiyegun/Igbo Street. The facility was installed with a borehole, over head tanks, surface water pumps, and generator. In addition, a table with an umbrella and chair were provided for the water sales assistant at both sites.

Flyers promoting health messages were printed and distributed by members of the media team to sensitize the Community on the existence of the water points and the health benefits of having clean potable water.

The Obalende Community Development Association (CDA) has been assigned the duties of facility manager and will be responsible for the day today running of the water facilities. This will be in consultation with a governing body set up to oversee the running of the facility. Those represented on the governing council are from the environment team, Obalende elders association and Obalende CDA.

The water will be sold free of charge to the community for domestic use, however water will be sold at a fee to the water vendors operating in the area. The proceeds will be used to run and maintain the water facilities.

Financial Boost for Small Businesses in Obalende

The Economic Empowerment team of the Obalende Project kicked off their activities by raising a small fund to create a capital base from which a revolving micro credit scheme was established for the benefit of the Obalende community.  The group has been able to identify a need among the widows in Obalende to get funding for their small business activities.

On September 23, 2006 the Economic Empowerment team in collaboration with the Susu Micro-Finance Bank, organized a seminar for the widows in Obalende to explain how the proposed revolving micro-credit scheme works and how the widows could benefit from it.

The collaboration with SuSu Micro-Finance will enable the economic empowerment team monitor and ensure repayments of loans.

The scheme presently gives out micro financing ranging from N 15, 000.00 (fifteen thousand Naira only) to N 35, 000.00 (thirty-five thousand Naira only) to people who already have businesses and require additional funds or for start-ups, however all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
